There are waterfalls you photograph, and then there is Diamante Falls — where you can spend the night inside the mountain, behind the water. Near the village of Las Tumbas above Tinamaste, Diamante is a towering multi-tier cascade whose tallest tier runs around ~183 m (~600 ft), making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Costa Rica. Behind the falling water is a real cave — outfitted by the guides with sleeping platforms, a functioning kitchen, and a bathroom — where you fall asleep to the roar and wake up looking out through the curtain of the falls. This three-day micro-adventure is short, intense, and unlike anything else in the country.
⚠️ Guided-only, zero signal. Diamante Falls sits on private property and can only be visited — let alone slept in — on a mandatory guided tour. There is no cell signal at the falls or in the cave, and the descent is steep and strenuous. This is a serious mini-expedition, not a stroll. Book the guided cave-sleep in advance and follow your guide's calls on weather and water.
Day 1 — San Isidro (provision, meet guide)
Base in San Isidro de El General to provision and connect with your guide/operator for the final briefing: what to pack, water levels, the meeting point, and the plan for the descent. Diamante's overnight trips run on the operator's schedule, so this day is logistics and rest — sort your dry bag, water shoes, headlamp, and a warm layer for the cave, and get a good night's sleep before a big descent. 🟢
Eat: San Isidro sodas. Sleep: cabina or van in San Isidro / on the Tinamaste ridge.
Day 2 — 4x4 to Las Tumbas → guided descent → overnight in the cave
The main event. Drive (or transfer) by 4x4 to the Las Tumbas trailhead above Tinamaste, then descend steeply on foot with your guide to the base of Diamante Falls. The scale only becomes real when you're standing under it. Behind the water, the cave opens up — the guides have built sleeping platforms and basic facilities inside, so you settle in, eat, and spend the evening watching daylight fade through the falling water. Sleeping behind a 180-meter waterfall, with no signal and no one else around, is the entire reason this trip exists.

Day 3 — Explore the fall system → hike out → hot springs
In the morning, explore more of the multi-fall system with your guide — Diamante is part of a series of cascades, and there's more to see than the main drop. Then make the steep hike back out to Las Tumbas and your vehicle. Close the trip the way the whole zone does best: a soak at the Aguas Termales in San Gerardo de Rivas (~$7) to reset legs worked hard by the climb out. 🔴 The descent-and-ascent is the crux — pace it and hydrate.

Insider tips
- Book the guided cave-sleep well ahead — capacity is tiny and it's the only way in.
- Go in the dry season, and trust the operator's weather call — Diamante is not worth risking a flooded descent.
- Pack light but warm: dry bag, water shoes, headlamp, and an insulating layer — the cave is cool and damp.
- Bank a recovery day or the hot springs for after the hike out; the ascent from the base is the hardest part.
- Manage your own expectations on signal — you'll be completely offline for a full day; that's the appeal.
