Day-by-Day
Days 1–3 — Peninsula Papagayo & Flamingo (Luxury Coast)
Drive: Liberia (LIR) to Peninsula Papagayo is a quick ~30–45 min on paved road. Do: settle into the luxury coast — the Four Seasons and Andaz Peninsula Papagayo anchor the peninsula, with Marina Papagayo launching catamaran cruises and sportfishing charters. A sunset sail on the Gulf is the signature first-night move. Day-trip north to Marina Flamingo for offshore sportfishing (marlin/sailfish in season) and to Playa Conchal's shell-sand beach. The smoothest line descends toward San José and picks up the fast Route 27 to Route 34 (the coastal Costanera). Start early, plan a lunch stop (Jacó or the Tárcoles crocodile bridge break up the drive), and treat the coastal Route 34 stretch as part of the scenery. Sleep: arrive Uvita/Ojochal by evening.
Days 8–9 — Uvita, Marino Ballena & Ojochal
Do: Marino Ballena National Park and the famous Whale's Tail sandbar — walk out at low tide (check the tide chart; the formation only reveals on the outgoing tide). Take a boat tour for dolphins and, in season, humpback whales. Add Nauyaca Waterfalls near Dominical — a beautiful two-tier falls ~10 km inland, reachable by an easy-to-moderate hike or a horseback/pickup tour (entry from ~$32; horseback and pickup options operate — verify the current offering when you book).
