Central Pacific Power: Jacó, Hermosa & Esterillos

If Nicoya is where Costa Rica learns to surf, the central Pacific is where it turns pro. Barely 90 minutes from San José, this short stretch packs the country's most useful range of power into one easy drive: forgiving beginner peaks at Jacó, the heavy, pitching beach break at Playa Hermosa that hosts national and international contests, and the empty, consistent sandbars of Esterillos in between. This is the closest serious surf to the SJO airport, which makes it the perfect five-day (🟢) loop for a first-and-last-week bookend or a quick fix — you can be surfing within two hours of landing.

Why do it in your own rig instead of a Jacó surf-camp package: these three beaches face west and take the SW–W swell head-on, but they want completely different sizes and tides on the same day. Jacó goes soft and manageable when a south swell shrinks it; Hermosa lights up double-overhead and heavy; Esterillos hides an empty peak no matter how good it looks. A camp bus can't be at a beginner beach, a pro beach break, and a secret sandbar at once. A board-racked compact 4x4 can — you graduate from Jacó to Hermosa across the week and duck to Esterillos whenever you want a peak to yourself.

It works year-round, which is rare in Costa Rica. The green season (Apr–Oct) brings the biggest, heaviest SW swells — Hermosa at its most serious — while the dry season offers cleaner, lighter-wind mornings and more manageable size. Improvers should treat Jacó and small Esterillos as home base and only take on Hermosa when it's honestly within their level.

Day-by-day

Day 1 — SJO → Jacó (~1.5–2 hr, paved Rte 27 + coastal Rte 34). Land and drive straight to the coast on good pavement — the fastest airport-to-surf transfer in the country. Playa Jacó is a long, sand-bottom beach break that's the region's beginner-and-improver hub: it breaks smaller on south swells, works best around two hours before high tide, and offers a low-tide whitewater reform for lessons. Fit boards, book a coached session if you're building, and enjoy the town's dense restaurant-and-nightlife strip. Sleep central.

Day 2 — Playa Hermosa de Jacó (~10 min south, paved). Ten minutes south, everything changes. Playa Hermosa is a four-mile black-sand beach break with real power — pitching A-frames, double-overhead days, and the national contest venue (finals run here in season). It's an advanced wave when it's big; the beach break only turns on toward high tide and closes out on the wrong size, so check it honestly and pick your peak. If it's over your head, this is exactly the day to slide back to Jacó or south to Esterillos. Dawn offshore session, midday off, evening check.

Day 3 — Esterillos (Oeste/Centro) (~30 min south, paved + short local roads). Esterillos is the antidote to Jacó's crowds: roughly 10 miles of quiet, undeveloped, south-facing beach with peaks for everyone. Esterillos Oeste holds the best waves — "El Pico," a punchy performance A-frame on the reef-sand at the west end, and "Escuela," a slow, forgiving beach break in front of the school that's ideal for intermediates practicing turns. Centro and Este are pure swell-magnet beach break with zero crowds. Best on a S swell, 3–5 ft, morning offshore. Camp or stay in a small Oeste lodge.

Day 4 — Free day: chase the best of the three. By now you know the personalities. Wake to the forecast and go where it's cleanest and your size — Hermosa if it's on and within you, Esterillos for empty walls, Jacó for a mellow high-tide session. Two sessions bracketing the wind, a long lunch between.

Day 5 — → SJO (~1.5–2.5 hr, paved). One last dawn session, then the easy paved run back to the airport. Buffer three hours; central-Pacific-to-SJO traffic on Rte 27 can bunch up.

The breaks

• Playa Jacó — long sand-bottom beach break; smaller on south swells, best ~2 hr before high, low-tide reform for lessons. Beginner to improver.
• Playa Hermosa de Jacó — heavy four-mile black-sand beach break, pitching A-frames, double-overhead days, national contest venue; works toward high tide. Advanced.
• Esterillos Oeste ("El Pico" / "Escuela") — a performance A-frame plus a forgiving intermediate beach break; empty. Best S swell, mid-to-high, morning offshore. Improver to advanced by peak.
• Esterillos Centro/Este — pure swell-magnet beach break, punchy and crowd-free. Intermediate.

Where to stay

Jacó has the widest lodging and the surf-shop-and-lesson infrastructure — the natural base for the beginner-and-town side. Esterillos Oeste has a growing but low-key cluster of small hotels and beachfront campgrounds (there are no dedicated surf camps out here — Jacó camps drive down when the city goes flat). A self-contained rig is ideal for the quiet Esterillos peaks; confirm site security locally. Book Jacó ahead in dry-season peak.

Surf logistics

• Season / swell: Year-round surf; Apr–Oct SW swells bring the biggest, heaviest Hermosa. Dry season = cleaner, lighter-wind mornings. All three face west and take SW–W head-on.
• Boards: Shortboard for Jacó/Esterillos, a step-up for Hermosa's power; a mid-length or longboard for Escuela and small Jacó days.
• Tides: Jacó ~2 hr before high; Hermosa toward high; Esterillos generally mid-to-high (peaks shift with the sandbars).
• Hazards: Powerful beach-break currents and closeouts at Hermosa on the wrong size; shifting sandbars and rip currents everywhere. Rivermouths at Esterillos are shifty and rippy.
• 4x4 need / connectivity: A compact 4x4 is plenty — it's paved highway with short local roads. Good cell/data throughout.
• Respect / localism: Jacó is busy and friendly; Hermosa's lineup is more serious — earn your peak. Esterillos is empty, so there's rarely competition for waves.
• Tag: 🟢 overland — fully paved spine, the easiest surf logistics in the country.

Insider tips

1. This is the airport bookend wave. Two hours from SJO means you can surf your arrival day and your departure morning — build them in.
2. Read Hermosa honestly. It's a genuinely heavy, high-tide beach break; when it's double-overhead, the right move is Jacó or Esterillos, not ego.
3. Esterillos is your empty-peak insurance. No matter how good it looks, there's always a spot to yourself — go west (Oeste) for the best of it.
4. Time contest season if you want the spectacle — the national finals run at Hermosa in the dry-season window (verify dates); a great watch, a crowded lineup.
5. Dawn offshore, always. All three clean up in the early window before the onshore fills in.
